Beaded Narratives: The Language of Colour in African Adornment

Exploring the intricate coded language of beadwork across West and East African cultures — from Maasai collars to Ashanti crowns.

March 15, 2026 — August 31, 2026

Beadwork in Africa is far more than decoration — it is a language. Colours, patterns, and arrangements carry specific meanings: love, mourning, status, fertility, and warning. This exhibition presents over 60 beaded works spanning centuries and cultures.

From the brilliant red and white geometric patterns of Maasai wedding collars to the densely beaded masks of the Bamileke people, each piece tells a story of identity, community, and ritual. The exhibition includes rare Ashanti ceremonial pieces, Zulu love letters, and Ndebele marriage aprons.

Interactive stations allow visitors to decode the colour language of different cultures and try their hand at basic beading techniques guided by resident Maasai artisans.
