Cultural Heritage Centre

The Experience

Three levels of cultural encounter — from the inspired to the transformed. Each deepens your connection to the art, heritage, and living traditions of East Africa.

How It Works

Three Levels of Cultural Encounter

I

Level One

Observe

Be hosted, informed, and inspired. A beautifully guided introduction to the Centre and its cultural world.

II

Level Two

Participate

Make, learn, and create. Step into the hands of master artisans and carry something personal away.

III

Level Three

Immerse

Awe, discovery, and significance. Encounter the ceremonial depth and conservation legacy of East Africa.

Level One

Observe

Be hosted, informed, and inspired. Our Level One experiences introduce you to the Centre and open the door to its world.

The Guided Journey — tour of Cultural Heritage Centre

The Guided Journey

A tour unlike any other

Led by knowledgeable guides — many of them artists and cultural specialists — the Guided Journey takes you through the galleries, museums, and workshops of the Cultural Heritage Centre. Stories are told, questions answered, and connections made at every turn.

Whether you visit independently, with a safari group, or as part of an educational delegation, the Guided Journey is the finest way to begin your encounter with East African art and heritage.

The Rooftop Table

The Rooftop Table

Dine above East Africa’s largest gallery

Above the gallery and market, our dayrooms and dining spaces offer a place to pause, reflect, and savour the experience. The Rooftop Table is where the journey continues — over coffee, a meal, and unhurried conversation.

A natural complement to a guided tour, and a destination in its own right for visitors seeking somewhere considered and calm in Arusha.

Level Two

Participate

Make, learn, and create alongside master artisans. Level Two experiences are personal, hands-on, and deeply memorable.

The Bead Studio

The Bead Studio

Learn the language of Maasai beadwork

To the Maasai, every bead carries meaning — colour, pattern, and placement each tell a story. In the Bead Studio, guided by Maasai artisans, you will learn the language of beadwork and create a piece of your own to take home.

The Tinga Tinga Atelier

The Tinga Tinga Atelier

Paint in Tanzania’s most joyful tradition

Tinga Tinga art was born on the streets of Dar es Salaam and has become one of Africa’s most beloved visual languages. In the Atelier, practising artists guide you through the technique, colour, and spirit of this vibrant tradition.

The Weaving Circle

The Weaving Circle

Discover the art of African basketry

Weaving and basketry are among the oldest craft traditions of East Africa. The Weaving Circle is a hands-on session with skilled craftspeople who will teach you the patterns, materials, and patience of this enduring art form.

Level Three

Immerse

Awe, discovery, and cultural significance. Level Three experiences deliver the depth that defines a journey to the Cultural Heritage Centre.

Museum of Tribal Ceremonies

The Museum of Tribal Ceremonies

A window into the sacred traditions of East Africa

The Museum of Tribal Ceremonies preserves and celebrates the rituals, regalia, and ceremonial objects of Tanzania’s indigenous peoples. Carefully assembled displays guide visitors through initiation rites, harvest celebrations, and spiritual practices that have shaped communities for centuries.

From elaborately beaded Maasai wedding collars to carved ritual staffs and painted ceremonial shields, each object represents a living tradition — one that continues to be practised, adapted, and honoured by its people today.

The Jane Goodall Experience

The only permanent Jane Goodall exhibition outside Europe

Created in partnership with the Jane Goodall Institute, this permanent museum chronicles Dr. Goodall’s extraordinary journey — from her early research in the forests of Gombe Stream to becoming one of the world’s most influential voices for wildlife and the environment.

Through photographs, personal artefacts, documentary screenings, and interactive displays, visitors leave with a profound understanding of what one determined individual can achieve — and why it matters.
