The Merelani Mines: Origin of the World’s Rarest Gemstone
The Merelani Hills lie in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro, near the town of Simanjiro in northern Tanzania. This small area — just 7 kilometres long and 2 kilometres wide — is the only known source of gem-quality tanzanite on Earth.
Mining at Merelani is divided into four blocks (A through D), each with different characteristics. Block C and D are home to smaller-scale operations that produce some of the finest crystals. Our supply chain works exclusively with licensed miners who follow ethical labour practices and environmental standards.
