To the Maasai, beadwork is not merely decoration — it is a language. Every colour carries meaning: red for bravery and blood, blue for the sky and water, green for the land and health, white for peace and purity, orange for hospitality, and black for the struggles of life.
The women who create these intricate designs learn from their mothers and grandmothers, developing their skills over decades. A single elaborate wedding collar can take months to complete, with thousands of tiny glass beads stitched into precise geometric patterns.
At the Cultural Heritage Centre, we work directly with Maasai beadwork cooperatives in the Monduli and Longido districts, ensuring fair compensation and supporting training programmes for young artisans.
