The Stone
Garnet is a family of gems, not one stone — from the raspberry rhodolite of the Umba valley to mandarin-orange spessartite — and Tanzania is one of its great sources. Our gemologists grade every garnet on colour, clarity, cut and carat. Here is how to read them, and where this piece sits.
This piece · graded by our gemologists
Garnet spans deep red, raspberry, orange and green; it is judged on the purity of colour and the absence of brown. Rhodolite’s raspberry-purple and spessartite’s mandarin orange are the most prized.
Our gemologists grade clarity in three steps: Internally Flawless — nothing to find even under 10× magnification; Small inclusion — a trace only a loupe reveals; Medium inclusion — a natural feature you may find with the naked eye, in a stone chosen for its colour. Most garnet is clean to the eye.
Garnet is bright and usually clean, so cutters favour shapes that show sparkle — rounds, ovals and cushions.
Most garnets come in good sizes; the exceptions are fine spessartite and tsavorite, where stones above three carats are rare.
