The Stone
Pearl is the only gem made by a living creature — grown, not mined — and judged by lustre first. Here is how our gemologists read a pearl, and where this piece sits.

Pearls range from white and cream through silver, gold and pink to the dark greens and peacock tones of Tahiti; the overtone that plays over the body colour is what gives a pearl its life.
For pearls, clarity means the surface: the fewer spots, pits and ridges, the finer the pearl. A clean surface and a mirror-like lustre matter far more than size.
Pearls are not cut but matched — for shape, size, colour and lustre. A well-matched strand can take years to assemble.
Pearls are measured in millimetres, not carats; every extra millimetre above eight is markedly rarer.
