The Stone

Understanding sapphire

Sapphire is corundum in every colour but red — the blue of kings, and a stone Tanzania itself produces at Tunduru and Songea in the south. Our gemologists grade every sapphire on colour, clarity, cut and carat. Here is how to read them, and where this piece sits.

Blue sapphire runs from pale sky to deep royal blue; the finest is a vivid, velvety blue that stays bright in low light. Sapphire also comes in pink, yellow, green, violet and the rare orange-pink padparadscha.

02Clarity

IFInternally flawlessSISmall inclusionMIMedium inclusion

Our gemologists grade clarity in three steps: Internally Flawless — nothing to find even under 10× magnification; Small inclusion — a trace only a loupe reveals; Medium inclusion — a natural feature you may find with the naked eye, in a stone chosen for its colour. Fine sapphire often carries silk — needle-fine inclusions that soften the light beautifully.

03Cut

Cushion
Oval

Round

Cushion and oval cuts hold colour; because sapphire is dichroic, the cutter orients the stone so the purest blue faces up, and keeps weight where the colour is deepest.

04Carat

5 ct
10 ct

Fine blue sapphire above two carats is scarce and the price per carat climbs steeply with size; colour and clarity decide value before weight does.
