Edward Said Tingatinga revolutionised Tanzanian art in the late 1960s when he began painting vibrant, stylised animals on masonite boards using bicycle paint. His bold, layered technique — building up colours in radiating patterns — created an entirely new genre that has since become Tanzania’s most recognisable art export.
Today, second and third-generation Tingatinga artists continue to develop the style, introducing new subjects and techniques while maintaining the joyful, accessible spirit that made the original works so beloved.
