Understanding Kanga: More Than Just Fabric

The kanga is East Africa’s most iconic textile — a rectangular cotton cloth worn by women across Tanzania, Kenya, and the broader Swahili coast. But the kanga is far more than clothing. Each piece carries a Swahili proverb or saying (jina) that communicates messages of love, wisdom, protest, or celebration.

At the Market, we carry both traditional and contemporary kanga designs, including limited-edition prints by East African fashion designers who are reimagining this cultural staple for a new generation.
